Acts 18:5

Paul was compelled by the Spirit and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. Acts 18:5 NKJV

He was compelled by the Spirit.

Compel - to drive or urge forcefully or irresistibly; to cause to do by overwhelming pressure
  • He didn't do it on his own.
  • He was nudged to do it.
  • He didn't do it alone.
  • He was filled by the Holy Spirit.
  • Just because he was pressured didn't mean he had to act on that pressure.

He testified.

Testify - to bear witness to, attest, to affirm to be true or genuine
  • He acted.
  • He listened to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and followed the suggestion.
  • He told others what he had actually witnessed.
  • He had a personal conviction of truth.

Jesus is the Christ.

  • Jesus is the Messiah - the expected king and deliverer of the Jews
  • Jesus is the Savior.
  • Jesus is the Son of God.
  • Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophesies.
  • Jesus is the one that the Jews were waiting for and didn't realize it, so when they opposed and insulted him, Paul said he was going to go tell the Gentiles. (Acts 18:6)
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:25

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

Dear Lord, please help me to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

The Unknown God

"His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him - though he is not far from any of us. For in him we live and move and exist... We are his offspring." Acts 17:27-31

One of their altars had the inscription, "To an Unknown God." This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I'm telling you about. Acts 17:23

Even the people who don't know him, know that he's there. 

He created us so that we would seek for him and so that we would find him. 

All humans come from one blood - Adam, and the breath of life that God breathed into Adam. We are all brothers and sisters as children of our Creator. 

God is so big that we can't fathom it, but we live and move and have our being in Him.

God loves all of his creation. 

God doesn't need anything, but He wants us to seek Him and find Him. 

When you love someone, you want to spend time with them. 

When you love someone, you hope that they love you in return.

When you love someone, you hope that want to spend time with you as well.

To seek and to find infers a process, a hunt, or a journey, like going on an adventure to find a lost treasure.

I'm guessing that since we are all different, we will all have different journeys or paths to take, just like there are several roads to take to get from point A to point B. Some will take shortcuts and others will take the scenic route, so we will all have different obstacles to face along the way.

So, brothers and sisters, we need to give each other grace as we are all on our different treasure hunts facing different challenges along the way. 

My identity is not as a wife, a mother, a leader, a teacher, a singer, a student, a worker, a counselor... 

My identity is being a child of God. My identity is in Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.

The Name of Jesus Christ

 "His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all." Acts 3:16

Observations:

Faith in the name of Jesus Christ is power.

"soundness" = freedom from flaws or defects, not diseased or sick, freedom from error, right.

Faith in Jesus healed the lame man and made him well again.

This could be a metaphor that faith in Jesus can make us right with God.

This soundness is something that other people can see.  

        - This reminds me of Psalm 23... He renews my strength... He prepares a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. 

Application:

Faith in Jesus is very powerful and gives us His strength.

We need to have faith and believe, or else it's all for nothing.

We are to pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, I have faith in You. You are faithful to us. Thank You that we can trust You. Help my faith to grow stronger in You Lord. Let my faith in You be an example to others. Help me to be a good witness for You Lord. Thank you Jesus for being my Lord and Savior! Amen

Daily Decisions

 "So, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart praising God and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." Acts 2:46-47

Observations:

The word "daily" speaks out to me - every day.

"One accord" - they were all in agreement.

They were fellowshipping with each other at each other's homes. 

They were satisfied and content.

They praised God. 

So, because of their example, many people were saved.

Application:

We have daily decisions and choices. 

We need to have fellowship with one another.

We need to be content and praise God for His blessings.

We need to be good examples to others around us so that they can know the love of God.

Prayer:

Please help us Lord to follow You every day. Thank You Lord for all Your many blessings. I am so grateful for all You have done. Please help us to be a good witness for You. Thank you Jesus! Amen!

I don't need to know everything

Jesus said, "The Father alone has the authority to set dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere... in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:7-8

Obervation:

We need to be baptized with water and be baptized with the Holy Spirit as well. That is when we receive His power so that we can tell the world about Him. 

We are to be His witnesses in our own hometown, in the next city, in the whole country, and around the world. 

God has plan and a purpose. God's timing is perfect. 

God is in control. God is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. 

Application:

I can trust God. I don't need to know everything, because God does. I know that God wants what is best for me because I know that He loves me no matter what! I don't need to worry because I have faith and hope in the Lord's promises. I have been given a Helper who gives me His power. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I need to use His power and His strength that He gives me to do His will and to be an example to those around me. 

Prayer:

Dear Lord, please let your light shine through me. My identity is in Christ. Thank you, Lord, for your help, your strength, and your power to do your will. Please guide me and direct my path. I can do nothing without you Lord. I'm so tired Lord. Please help me to remember that I don't need to do things in my own strength. With you, the yoke is easy, and the burden is light. I am a leaky vessel and need you to fill me with your Holy Spirit on a daily basis. I need your strength everyday Lord. I cannot do it my own. I love you, Lord. Thank You Lord for all your many blessings! Amen!

Jesus is the perfect sacrifice, once and for all!

Holy, blameless, and without sin, Jesus offered Himself up as the perfect sacrifice. He did this once for all! (Hebrews 7:26-27)

Jesus fulfills all that God requires as the perfect sacrifice, without spot or blemish. We don't have to offer sacrifices for our sins anymore because Jesus paid the price once and for all!

Our sins are forgiven! All means all!  Past, present, and future! 

God no longer remembers our sins! (Jeremiah 31:34)

Jesus is separate from sinners. He is set apart. (Hebrews 7:26)

If we are in Christ Jesus, then we are to be set apart as well. 

Even though Jesus is set apart, Jesus is approachable, because He was tempted as a human here on Earth, so He understands us and what we're going through. (Matthew 4:1)

The Son of God has been perfected forever. (Hebrews 7:28) 

Jesus lives forever! We serve a living God who hears us and speaks to us!

Thank you, Jesus, for what you did for us! 

For God so loved the world, that He sent his one and only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Dear Lord, please help me to understand when I read Your Word. Please give me Your wisdom and Your knowledge. Thank You for teaching me Lord. Please help me to do Your will Lord and to not sin. Help to me to walk in Your Spirit and not in my flesh. Thank You Lord for your help and your guidance. Help me to listen to You and to hear You, Lord. Amen.

Hebrews 6:12

"Show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end that you don't become sluggish but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises." Hebrews 6:12

Don't give up!!  (Galatians 6:9)

Keep pressing on, running the race toward the prize. (Philippians 3:12-14, Hebrews 12:1)

If you love me, you will obey me. (John 14:15)

Hope does not disappoint! (Romans 5:1-5)

Please Lord, help me to be diligent. Help me to persevere against temptation and laziness. Help me to stay in Your Word, to pray continuously, and to do Your will Lord.

Living Faith

Even though faith without works is dead (James 2:14), I have to be careful not to put too much emphasis on "works," because I am justified by faith apart from works. (Rom 3:28)

I don't want to live like Martha anymore! I want to be like Mary at the feet of Jesus! (Luke 10:38-42) 

I have been saved by grace through faith, which is a free gift from the merciful God and not because of anything I have done! (Eph 2:8, Rom 11:6)

Yes, I was created by God, in Christ Jesus for good works, but I don't have to stress about whether I'm doing enough to serve Him! God already prepared the good works for me! (Eph 2:8-10)

I don't have to stress and worry because God is control, and He has a plan and a purpose for me. He wants what is best for me. I trust Him because I am His child so He is providing, protecting, and guiding me.

His yoke is easy and His burden is light. 

"Be still and know that I am God," says the Lord. 

Trust in the Lord and He will direct your path.

So if faith without works is dead, then what is living faith?

I think living faith is walking in the Spirit. 

Since God already prepared the good works for me to walk in, then I need to surrender my flesh and live by the Spirit. Instead of walking in the flesh, I must walk in the Spirit. (Gal 5:25)

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Galatians 5:22-23 

So living faith is...
Not worrying about what I do, 
Not stressing over doing enough,
Not walking in the flesh, 
Not living like Martha, but 
Worshiping Jesus like Mary,
Trusting the Lord, 
Resting in the Lord,
Seeking first the kingdom of God, 
Depending on God,
Spending quality time with Jesus, 
Walking in the Spirit.

Dear Lord, thank you for your mercy, your grace, your provision, and your guidance. Please fill me with your Holy Spirit every day. Help me to walk in the Spirit. Amen.

Hebrews 6:4-8

Works without faith are dead. 

Those who give an outward appearance of belief are like the land that produces thorns and thistles. (Hebrews 6:8)

Faith without works is dead. (James 2:17)   

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22)

No good tree bears bad fruit, and no bad tree bears good fruit. (Matthew 7:15-20)

The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. You too be patient. (James 5:7-8)

The context of this passage comes directly after the author saying we need to stop laying the foundation over and over again, and that we need to build on that foundation and grow into mature believers and doers of the faith. 

If we continue in an endless cycle of sinning and repenting, our hearts will be hardened so much so that we will eventually turn away from God entirely. Therefore, it's time to grow up spiritually speaking and mature in our faith. 

Thinking we have to do it all in our own strength, fear of not being good enough, and a lack of trusting in God may be contributing factors that hinder or stunt our growth. 

A mature believer receives blessings from God because they are producing a crop that is useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated. Hebrews 6:7

Cultivate (verb) prepare and use for the raising of crops, to loosen or break up the soil; to foster the growth of; to refine; to improve by labor, care, or study; to encourage

There is either an endless cycle of sinning and repenting, or there is an endless cycle of refining and blessing. 

Dear Lord, please help me to produce good fruit. Thank you Lord.

Hebrews 6:1-3

 It's time to stop laying the foundation because the foundation has been laid. It's time to start building upon that foundation that has been laid. It's time to learn more and grow in maturity. 

Six foundational teachings:

  1. Faith without works is dead, produces good fruit
  2. Whatever is not faith is sin (Romans 14:23)
  3. Clean heart
  4. Needs to be led by God and not in our own strength, like when Moses struck the rock so he lost the promise because he didn't give God the credit
  5. Our faith is built on the resurrection of Jesus Christ
  6. Eternal judgment (Daniel 7)
What keeps us from moving past foundational teachings to eating solid food? Maybe a lack of trusting in God, maybe a fear of not being good enough, and probably thinking that I have to do it my own strength rather than relying on God's power and authority.

Dear Lord, please fill me with your holy spirit daily. Lord please help me to study Your Word. Thank you Lord for your help and your guidance.

Hebrews 5:14

 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:14

When one is spiritually mature and spiritually disciplined, then that person is able to discern both good and evil, is skilled in the word of righteousness, and should teach others what they have learned about how to study God's Word.

We cannot stay on our mother's milk and baby food forever; as we grow, we learn to eat meat... then as we mature, we learn to hunt for our food and cook the food for ourselves. Likewise, we must grow and mature in our faith and then help others to do the same. 

We need to use our senses and have our senses exercised so that we are able to discern both good and evil. 

People who handle abundant amounts of cash for a living have been taught to use their senses when studying what real cash looks and feels like, so that when something counterfeit comes along, they will know it because it doesn't look right and/or it doesn't feel right. 

It is better to study what is right, that way you'll know when something is wrong, even though you may not be able to understand or explain it fully, you will know that it is not quite right.

Accordingly, when someone says to you that money is the root of all evil, you will know that is not quite right... it's not the money itself, it is actually the love of money according to God's Word.

"For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:10

Please help us Lord to study and know Your Word.

Hebrews 4:11-13

God wants us to make every effort to remember to take a break and rest, even if we have to schedule it on our personal calendar and set an alarm to remind ourselves.

God wants us to continually try to be obedient and try not to sin. 

God knows our inner thoughts and hearts so we must continually strive to not sin and not harden our hearts for fear that we won't enter into His rest for our souls. 

Knowing that God is all-knowing shows me that I am known by God.

Dear Lord, I know I am not perfect, that is why I need Jesus! Please don't let my heart be hardened with the deceitfulness of sin, disobedience and unbelief. I need to trust you Lord because you are all-knowing. Please help me Lord to continually pray and seek your will and your guidance and to remember that you know my heart and thoughts. Thank you Lord!

Hebrews 4:10

 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.  Hebrews 4:10

This verse in Hebrews refers to the Lord's 4th commandment:

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore, the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy." Exodus 20:8-11

God is commanding us to take a break! He is indeed giving us permission to take some time off and rest! How amazing and wonderful is that!

Honestly, I have found that when I do take the time to truly rest, that not only do I feel better for it, but I am also admittedly more productive!

We can rest in His grace and mercy.  Thank you, God, for your peace that passes all understanding. Praise the Lord!

Hebrews 3:13

 Exhort one another daily, while it is called "today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13

We are only human. We are all sinners. We need to help each other remember and encourage each other to press on. It is very easy to fall away and get discouraged. 

We have to be careful not to make the same mistake that the Israelites did. They actually saw the wonders and miracles of God and yet they complained and were not able to enter the Promised Land.

Dear Lord, please help us to persevere to the end. Please help us to hear your still small voice and to listen to you speaking to us. Help us to do it with the right heart. Thank you, Lord, that we can take comfort in knowing that you see our heart.

Hebrews 2:5-18

 Hebrews 2:5-8 refers to Psalm 8:4-6:

"What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands, you have put all things under his feet."

mindful (adjective) aware, attentive, observant, vigilant, careful

What are humans that the almighty God would keep a watchful eye over us? 

The son of man is Jesus, being both God and man....Jesus was made lower than the angels, meaning he was human....Jesus was crowned with glory and honor, meaning he is Lord, and has the authority and control over everything God created. 

Knowing that God is in control of everything, that He has a plan and a purpose (Isaiah 14:24), that He can bring good out of something bad (Romans 8:28), gives us the peace that passes all understanding! (Phil. 4:7) "Do not be afraid, for I am with you," says the Lord! (Isaiah 41:10)

God made Jesus human to walk on this earth for a little while, and now He is our Lord and Savior to be worshiped and praised. 

Jesus is God's one and only begotten Son. God created humans. We are God's children. We have been adopted as believers in Christ. (Romans 8:14-15) God is vigilant in taking care of His children. Hebrews 2:10-18 refers to us as a family (sons, brothers, children, offspring, flesh and blood). If Jesus is God's son, and we are God's children, then Jesus is our brother! Jesus is "not ashamed," meaning He is proud to call us brothers and sisters! (Hebrews 2:11) 

Jesus was made like us humans in every respect so that He could fully understand us, so that He can be merciful and help us when we are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:17-18)

When we are tempted, Jesus can help us so that don't give in to temptation. 

God does not tempt us. (James 1:13)

"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." 1 Corinthians 10:13

We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. We are all family in the kingdom of God. We are one body in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-13, 27)

Jesus, as High Priest in the service of God, made propitiation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:17)

propitiation (noun) appeasement, the act of gaining favor or goodwill

appease (verb) to reconcile, to make someone pleased or less angry by giving or saying something desired, to bring to a state of peace 

propitiation = the action of appeasing God, the atonement (reparation for a wrong) for our sin, the reconciliation of God and man through Jesus Christ.

"For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus was "made perfect through suffering." Hebrews 2:10 

Jesus willingly endured the cross and died for our salvation as the perfect sacrifice. Jesus died to destroy the devil so death no longer has power. We are no longer slaves because Jesus delivered us!

Hebrews 2:1-4

Hebrews chapter one is distinguishing Jesus from the angels by demonstrating how God's only son is superior to and worshiped by the angels. 

"Therefore, we need to pay close attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. The message declared by the angels proved to be reliable." Hebrews 2:1-2

What was the message that we heard from the angels? God's law. (Acts 7:53, Galatians 3:19) 

God used to speak through prophets and angels, but now He speaks to us through Jesus. (Hebrews 1:1-2) 

Jesus is God's Word. (John 1:1) 

We need to focus on what God is telling us, so we don't get distracted and forget it. 

If the message declared by the angels was proven to be reliable, and if Jesus is superior to the angels, then how much more reliable is Jesus?

How was the angels' message proven to be reliable? 

Many people have accepted the existence of angels, given them honor and respect, while some have even worshiped them. We are warned not to worship the angels, and to worship God. Angels are commanded by God, and they are God's messengers. 

"Every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution" Hebrews 2:2. 

transgress (verb) to sin, to break a law, to go past a boundary

disobey (verb) to refuse or neglect to obey

Sin is sin, and it doesn't matter if we do or don't do it willfully, unconsciously, or even by accident, it's still sin. If we have broken one law, we may as well have broken them all. (James 2:10)

"But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you" Deuteronomy 28:15.

"Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip, for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly. For the Lord will vindicate his people" Deuteronomy 32:35-36.

Was being kicked out of the Garden of Eden a "just retribution" for eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? (Genesis 3)

Were the ten plagues a "just retribution" for Pharoah's disobedience not letting God's people go free? (Exodus 7-12)

Was being swallowed by a whale a "just retribution" for Jonah's disobedience for not going to Ninevah? (Jonah 1:17)

"Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience" Ephesians 5:6.

The angels' message was proven reliable because of physical blessings for obedience and/or physical consequences for disobedience. 

Therefore, we must focus on God's Word, so we don't sin. We have heard terrible consequences happen when people disobeyed God's law.

"How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" Hebrews 2:3

Reliable (adjective) able to be trusted and believed, credible, true

The credibility of our salvation is established:

  • It was declared at first by the Lord (Matthew 3:16-17)
  • It was attested to us by those who heard (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
  • God bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will (The New Testament)
If we can trust that there are consequences for breaking God's law, how much more can we trust the salvation of God's Word?

Hebrews Chapter 1

 The first chapter of Hebrews is giving Jesus the credibility that He is God's Son and not just another angel of the Lord, and giving Him the honor and glory. Not only is Jesus over the angels, God the Father has made Jesus superior to all and everything in subjection to Him. God gave His Son Jesus the authority of God over all. Jesus is the perfect sacrifice and died for our salvation. Jesus was human just like use and Jesus is God just like the Father. That's why He is able to help us. 

Even though we don't know who wrote the book of Hebrews, the letter is believed to be written probably between 60-70 AD, to Christians in a time of trial, as an encouragement in crisis to focus on Jesus.

Who Jesus is:

  • God's Son
  • the firstborn heir of all things
  • the radiance of God's glory
  • the exact imprint of God's nature 
  • superior to angels
Where Jesus is:
  • He is sitting at the right hand of God now.
  • He was there at the time of the creation of the world.
What Jesus is doing and has done:
  • God created the world through Jesus.
  • Jesus upholds the universe by the word of His power.
  • Jesus made purification for sins.
God used humans to speak to us at many times in different ways (Hebrews 1:1):
  • In Jacob's dream, he saw a ladder from earth to heaven with angels and the Lord promised him that He'd take care of him. (Genesis 28:10-15)
  • God spoke to Moses through a burning bush. (Exodus 3:1-6)
  • Thunder and lightning, loud trumpet blast, thick dark smoke, God gave the ten commandments through Moses. (Exodus 20:1-21)
  • Balaam's donkey saw the angel of the Lord. The Lord spoke through the donkey, and the Lord opened Balaam's eyes to see the angel. (Numbers 22:28,32)
  • The Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21)
Now God speaks to us through Jesus in these last days (Hebrews 1:2).

The author makes a point to state that Jesus is superior to the angels (Hebrews 1:4-14). 

Maybe the author was suggesting that the readers thought that Jesus was an angel or a prophet. Apparently, some people worshiped the angels (Colossians 2:18). 

Angels are:
  • to bow down to worship Jesus (Deut. 32:43)
  • not to be worshiped (Revelation 22:8-9)
  • wind (Heb. 1:7)
  • a flame of fire (Heb. 1:7)
  • used, changed, and worn like garments (Heb. 1:11-12)
  • perishable (Heb. 1:11)
  • ministering spirits (Heb. 1:14)
  • servants (Heb. 1:14)
  • messengers of God (Exodus 23:20, Matthew 28:2-7)
  • God commands them to guard and protect His followers (Psalm 91:11)

Jesus:
  • God's one and only begotten Son
  • God's anointed
  • sitting on throne at the right hand of God
  • His kingdom never ends
  • was at the beginning of creation
  • will live forever
  • His enemies are a footstool for His feet
So, if we believed the angels, how much more so we should believe Jesus.

Hebrews 1:3

"He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power." Hebrews 1:3

radiance (noun) light or heat as emitted or reflected by something

glory (noun) 1) high renown or honor won by notable achievements 2) magnificence or great beauty (verb) take great pride or pleasure in

When I think of radiance, I think of the sun shining so brightly through the clouds that I can see brilliant sunbeams piercing through the sky. 

When I think of radiance, I think of how a full moon can light up the night because it is reflecting the light from the sun that is hidden from our view. We can't see the sun at night, but the moon can. 

When I think of glory, I think of the goodness of God, giving thanks to God, honoring and praising God!

What is the glory of God? 
What is God's glory? 

Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus is the radiance of the world.
Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God.
The glory of God is the world!

The world is what God takes great pride and pleasure in!

Wow! That is mind blowing to me! That we are God's glory! 

When God looks at us, all He sees is Jesus! 

EXPERIMENT:

Here is an experiment to help understand how God looks at us once we have put our faith and trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior:

  1. Get a bunch of pennies and make two stacks. 
  2. Make one stack have more than the other. 
  3. Give the larger stack to another person.
  4. When you look at those stacks of pennies,
  • count how many pennies there are
  • see how tall or short
  • compare how much bigger their stack is than yours
Whoever doesn't have as many pennies doesn't measure up, feels less valuable, and doesn't feel worthy. 
  1. Stand up.
  2. Look down at the stacks of pennies from above. 
  3. What do you see?
When God looks at the stack of pennies, all He sees is the top of the stack... He only sees one penny! Before we were saved as believers in Christ, that penny is old, brown, and rusty. After we have been covered with the blood of Jesus and washed white as snow, then that penny is bright, shiny, and perfect! All God sees is Jesus! Isn't that absolutely mind-boggling?! I just love this beautiful mind picture!

Jesus is the exact imprint of God's nature. 
An exact imprint is like a fingerprint, something that is marked with the exact image.
Jesus is like the fingerprint of God on man. Jesus is both God and human. 
Jesus shows us the very character of God in human form. 
Jesus never sinned. Which is why Jesus was the perfect sacrifice to pay for our sins. 
Thank you, Jesus! Thank you for redeeming me and being my Lord and Savior!

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 

Jesus sustains everything by the mighty power of His command. 
Jesus is the Word of God. 
God is speaking to us through Jesus. 
There is power in the name of Jesus!

Thank you, Lord! Praise Jesus!

Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus is the radiance of the world. 
Jesus is the reflection of the honor and beauty of God. 
Jesus is reflecting God. 

This reminds me of the moon reflecting the light of the Sun at night. 
The sun is hidden from our view at night, but it is still there.
The moon gives light to the darkness of night. 
God is like the sun, just as Jesus is like the moon, just as the world is like the night.
What an awesome insight! 
We will never look at the moon the same way ever again!

How to Hear God Speaking

 "Mary stood weeping outside the tomb...she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus...supposing him to be the gardener" John 20:11-15

Mary Magdalene saw Jesus, but she didn't see him. She didn't recognize him. Jesus spoke to her and she still didn't recognize him!

Mary was a faithful woman of God! But she was distracted in her sorrow and grieving. She thought she knew but she didn't! She thought Jesus was dead, but he wasn't! Jesus is alive!

So this makes me wonder...how often does God speak to us and we're not listening or not understanding Him? 

How often do we think we know something, but really just the opposite is true because we don't have all the information?

I don't want to miss out on what God has for me. I need to always try to be listening to God.  I need to pay attention so I can listen. I need to tune in so I can hear him. 

You know how a radio has many different stations that you can listen to? When you're looking for a certain station, it's very easy to become distracted with other stations that you find along the way. 

It's very easy to get caught up in the distractions of this world. Distractions are like weeds that we need to dig up our of our garden so they don't choke out the beautiful flowers. 

"I the Lord your God am a jealous god." Exodus 20:5

God doesn't want to compete with all of the noise and busyness that we choose to fill our lives with.

Well, we as believers need to tune in to God's station! We need to set our hearts and minds on trying to hear God's still small voice when he is speaking to us. We need to walk in the spirit and focus on Him.

God speaks to his people. (Luke 8:4-15)

We need to prepare our hearts so that we can be ready to hear God. 

We need to be open-minded and willing to listen.

We need to set aside time to pray to God. 

We also need to set aside time to listen to God.

We need to eliminate the distractions so that we can focus on God and what He is speaking to us.

Dear Lord, please help me to hear your voice, and help me to listen to you. Please help me to be open-minded and realize that I may not always know what I think I know. If I am wrong about something, Lord please show me in your loving grace, merciful kindness. Thank you Lord!

Simple Act of Kindness

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple too her to his own home. John 19:25-27

I find it amazing that even as he is dying on the cross, while enduring such pain and torture, Jesus still takes care of his mother and friend. Jesus made sure that his mother, who was a widow, and John, his closest friend, would take care of each other after he was gone. Jesus was thinking of others instead of himself. Jesus was always helping others, even while hanging on a cross. This simple act of kindness is so overwhelmingly mind-boggling to me! 

When we are starving, or exhausted, or grieving, or hot-tempered, or suffering in pain or hardship, what is the first thing we do? Is our first thought to be kind to others? or do we immediately lash out at the person closest to us, only to regret it later when we are more in our right mind?

On the other side of the coin, when someone lashes out at us, are we forgiving them because we are thinking of the troubles they must be going through? or do we judge them harshly, hold a grudge, or hate them for offending us? 

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:32

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." Galatians 5:22-23

"Honor your father and your mother" Exodus 20:12

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4

"For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too." 2 Corinthians 1:5

What is Truth?

Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world." Pilate said, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born and for this cause I have come into the world that I bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." Pilate said, "What is truth?" Then he went back outside and told the Jews, "I find no guilt in him." John 18:36-38

What is truth? That is the million dollar question. 

I find it interesting that Pilate did not wait to hear Jesus' answer to his question. 

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

Jesus is the truth, and Jesus bears witness to the truth. So he is the truth, and he's also telling the truth.

Bears witness (verb) vouch for, attest, confirm, testify, prove, give testimony, to show that something exists.

Truth (noun) a verified or undisputable fact; reality; honesty.

Thesaurus synonym for truth is gospel.

Gospel (noun) the teachings of Jesus and the apostles; the story of Christ's life and teachings, especially as contained in the first four books of the New Testament, namely Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John;  something accepted as infallible truth.

Infallible (adjective) incapable of error.

Jesus said he is the truth. Just like God says, "I am." 

Then Jesus says he bears witness to the truth. Jesus always points to God the Father. 

So you could replace the truth with God...Everyone who is of God hears my voice. 

"I am the door of the sheep...The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." John 10:7-15

The sheep know their Shepherd's voice. John 10:27

Jesus said, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free...so if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:31-36

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me...practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." Phil. 4:8-9

Tribulation and Peace

 Jesus said, "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the world." John 16:33

What are "these things" that Jesus told them to give them peace? 

Context - Jesus is telling His disciples that they will weep, lament, and be full of sorrow because He is going to His Father. However, He will send the Holy Spirit as a helper who will guide to the truth, and their sorrow will turn into joy that no one can take away! (John 16:5-22) 

Tribulation (noun) grievous trouble, severe trial, suffering, affliction, hardship, distress

Peace (noun)  the normal non-warring condition of the world; tranquility, serenity, silence, stillness, freedom from strife, freedom of the mind from annoyance, distraction, anxiety, an obsession

How can you have peace if you have tribulation? The key words here are "in Jesus."

In Jesus (A) = peace (C)

In the world (B) = tribulation (D)

Jesus has overcome the world. A > B

Overcome (verb) to conquer, to defeat, to overpower, to beat, to get the better of a struggle or conflict

Thus, logically speaking, if A > B, then C > D...so, if A = C, then A > D as well. 

"Take heart" = hope, cherish, count on, believe, expect, cheer up, refresh, renew, brighten

In other words, if Jesus has defeated the tribulations in the world, and if we are in Jesus, then that means, even though we will have tribulations in the world, our peace in Jesus will win the battle with the enemy! Praise the Lord!

Joy that no one can take away? 

Is joy an emotion of happiness?  

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The Declaration of Independence by Congress, July 4, 1776.

The key words here are "the pursuit of happiness." 

Pursuit (noun) an effort to secure or attain; quest

Pursue (verb) to follow, to chase, to seek

Is happiness attainable? We may attain happiness, but only temporarily and we are always pursuing it again, even if for but a moment.

So if joy is something we can have that no one can take away, then, logically speaking, joy does not equal happiness. 

Is joy a state of being, a state of contentment?

"Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10

"Rejoice in the Lord always...do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:4-7

"What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me - practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:9

"I have learned to in whatever situation I am to be content... I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Philippians 4:11-13

Does this joy that Jesus is talking about mean peace? 

So, if no one can take away our joy in the Lord, then that means that no one can take away our peace!

Tips to memorize scripture

Choose a bible verse that you want to memorize. Keep this memory verse in mind for an entire week. If you memorize one bible verse each week, you will eventually memorize 52 bible verses in a year. 

Why should I memorize scripture? 



Tips to help you memorize scripture: 

  • Write out the bible verse on an index card. Take this index card with you wherever you go for a week. Put it on your dashboard in your car, tape it on your bathroom mirror while you get ready, tape it to the refrigerator so you see it every time you make a meal, etc. 

  • Define words you don't know first so that you can understand the verse better. 
  • Look up the same verse in different bible translations to find the one that speaks to you the most. I suggest using Bible Gateway. For this example, I chose the New Living Translation
  • Let the words of the verse speak to you. What is God trying to teach you with this memory verse? On the back of the index card, write out what is meaningful to you about this bible verse, what you learned from it, and how you can apply it to your life. It helps to have a reason why you are memorizing this verse.
  • Put all of your index cards in an index card container with index tabs so you can sort them by Books of the Bible or by Topic.
  • Get a spiral book of index cards, that way you can always carry all of your memory verses around with you.
  • On a sheet of paper, write out the bible verse several times. Just the simple action of writing it down over and over will help you remember it. Did your teacher ever make you stay after school for detention and write out something a hundred times on the chalk board as a way to help you remember something? For example: "I will remember to bring my homework in every day," or "I will not talk in class," or "I will not be late to class." (Hint: this may seem old-fashioned and you may prefer to type it out on your device, but sincerely, the action of hand writing will help put it on your brain.) 
  • You could put each of these sheets of paper in a 3-ring binder with index tabs so you can sort them by Books of the Bible or by Topic.
  • Get a spiral notebook or a hardback journal to write down all of your memory verses.
  • For shorter bible verses, say one word, then two words, then three words, and so on. For example: 
    • All
    • All scripture
    • All scripture is
    • All scripture is inspired
    • All scripture is inspired by
    • All scripture is inspired by God. 
  • Emphasize a different word each time you say the bible verse. This could possibly change the meaning each time you say it, to help you see a different perspective, and/or help you learn and focus on what God wants to tell you. For example:
    • All scripture is inspired by God.
    • All scripture is inspired by God.
    • All scripture is inspired by God.
    • All scripture is inspired by God.
    • All scripture is inspired by God.
    • All scripture is inspired by God.
  • For longer bible verses, you can concentrate on a smaller chunk at a time, such as a phrase or a line:
    • Write one line on the index card for the first day, then add another line on the second day, and so on. 
    • Write out the whole bible verse on the card, but just highlight the first line on the first day, then highlight the second line on the second day, and so on. 
    • Each line could be a different color of ink or highlighted a different color to help separate the chunks.
    • Put an extra long bible verse on the back of an actual puzzle that you have already put together that you will take apart and put back together again.
    • Write out each line on separate slips of paper that you have to put in order, like putting a puzzle together. 
    • On each of the separate slips of paper, you could put a relevant picture that will help you remember that line better, and if the pictures are silly, funny, or ridiculous, even better! These could be emojis, photos, colors, shapes, symbols, stickers, sounds, a taste, a smell, etc. See the following video below for an example:
  • Put the memory verse to music to help you remember. You can make up a tune, or you can put it to a familiar tune that you already know, such as: Mary Had a Little Lamb, Twinkle Little Star, or the Alphabet Song. Here is an example: 2 Timothy 3:16 Song Video
  • Add American Sign Language to your bible verse to help you remember it. Click here for adding signs to bible verses. Here are some examples:

Do Christian believers still sin?

 Sin is sin. The wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23)

If you've broken one of the ten commandments, then you might as well have broken them all because you have already not met God's standard of perfection. (Matthew 5:19) (James 2:10) 

God is perfect. (1 John 1:5)

All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. (Romans 3:23)

No one is perfect. (Romans 3:10-12) We have all sinned. (1 John 1:8) (Ecclesiastes 7:20)

That's why we need Jesus as our Lord and Savior. (1 John 1:9) Jesus is the perfect atoning sacrifice to pay the penalty for all sin, past, present, and future. (1 John 1:7)  So, when you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you receive a free gift of eternal life with God in heaven. (1 Peter 3:18)

Once you accept Jesus into your heart, all God sees is Jesus. (Galatians 2:20)

Once saved, always saved! (Romans 8:38-39) (1 Corinthians 1:8)

So do Christian believers still sin? (1 John 1:8-2:2)

We are not supposed to sin and keep on sinning even though we know it's wrong. (1 John 3:4-10)

Because of what Jesus went through to save me, I don't want to sin and I try not to sin because I am grateful for His mercy and grace. We are to walk in the spirit and not walk in the flesh. (Romans 7:14-25)

We are sinners saved by grace through faith. (Ephesians 2:8) We are still sinners, (1 John 2:1-2)  but we are striving to be more like Jesus. (1 John 2:6) 

Christ was tortured and died a brutal death, just for us, knowing full well what he was doing, and he did it anyway, willingly, because He loves us that much.  Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. (Romans 5:8)

God the Father sent His only begotten Son to die for us...that's how much He loves us! (John 3:16)

Can you imagine yourself as a parent sending your innocent child to take the place of a criminal, to be tortured and killed in order to save the criminal's life???

Sometimes we sin and don't even realize we have sinned. Let me give you a personal example:

Several years ago, when we were learning about the Passover, we thoroughly cleaned out and scoured the whole apartment from top to bottom. We got rid of all the yeast, the bread, pasta, even the crumbs in the toaster, because all of this symbolizes the sin in our lives. "Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses, for if anyone eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel." (Exodus 12:15) We couldn't believe how empty the cupboards were afterward! So we didn't eat anything we weren't supposed to for several days. But on the fifth or sixth day, we were sitting on the couch watching tv and I looked up for some reason. Bam! Staring at us right in front of our faces, on the shelf directly above the tv, in the living room for all to see, was a jar of noodles! We looked at each other in absolute bewilderment that there was leaven right in front of us for a week as we're staring at the tv and didn't even see it! The cleansing of the household before the Passover is to represent getting rid of all the sin and corruption in our lives. We really learned something important that day, that we could be sinning and not even realize it!

But even though we sinned unintentionally, we are still guilty according to God's law and atonement is required. (Lev. 5:14-19)

We may not act on our sinful thoughts, but even our sinful thoughts are still considered sin. (Matthew 5:27-28)

We may do something that we know is not right, but we do it anyway for whatever reason at the time, but then we regret doing it later, because of the consequences of our actions. Let me give a personal example:

As a parent, you tell your child not to touch the stove...why? because you don't want them to get burned! But the child doesn't understand that, all they hear is no, but they still want to touch the stove, and what happens? they burn themselves, and now you have to give them first aid and love and attention.  Do you tell them that you told them so? Do you scold them when they're hurt and crying in pain? or do you give them a hug, and kiss the booboo and comfort them because you love them? You know that that burn is going to sting for quite awhile and there is really nothing you can do about it except put some cream on it and just be there for them to comfort them. 

Well, the same goes with God. He tells what to do and what not to do to keep us safe and protected because He loves us as His children and wants to take care of us. God knows and tells us that we will have troubles, but God is our Comforter in all our afflictions. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) 

God gave us the law so that we would understand about sin. (Romans 7:7)

Even though we are not under the law, but under grace, we should still strive to not sin. (Romans 6)

The Lord sent us the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us to the truth. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. (John 16:7-14)

"God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. And remember, when you are bing tempted, do not say, 'God is tempting me.' God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. So don't be misled, my dear brothers and sisters." James 1:12-16

We are to be in the world, but not of this world. (Romans 12:2)

God is faithful, and He will always give us a way out. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

"From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh...Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation...All this is from God...that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them...we are ambassadors for Christ...For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

We're not to judge whether someone is going to heaven or not by their outward appearance, because the change is on the inside. But we judge people by their fruits, to see whether we can trust them, do business with them, etc. We cannot look deep enough to see if someone is saved. Only God knows if someone is saved. 

Some people may think that they are not worthy enough because they don't measure up to God's perfection, even after they were saved, when you couldn't ever even try to be good enough to receive salvation in the first place.

If a citizen breaks the law, they will pay a fine or go to jail, but they don't lose their citizenship.

If a student fails a test, they will get a bad grade, or if they misbehave, they may get detention, but they are not kicked out of the class. The student still goes back the next day to learn some more from the teacher.

If a son or daughter disobeys their parents, they will get disciplined, but they are still family.

If you sin, there are consequences to your actions, but you are still saved because of Jesus.

The Lord doesn't see as man sees. God looks into the heart. God looks at our spirit. 

God adopts us. We are born again into the family of God.

God no longer sees us, but he sees Jesus. We are in the spirit.

The more you look at the flesh, the more you act like the flesh. If you see yourself as a sinner, you'll act like a sinner. 

When you are meditating on God's Word, you live according to the spirit. (Romans 8:5) Then you'll see the fruits of the spirit. We are to walk in the spirit and not in the flesh. Be transformed by the renewing of our mind. (Romans 12:1-2)

We are free in Christ. We are no longer under the law because we have been saved by grace. We still sin even after we're saved. You cannot lose your salvation. When you sin, fellowship with God is broken but you don't lose your place in the family of God. There is a difference between relationship and fellowship. Confess your sin to renew your fellowship with God. 

Our goal as believers is to strive to become more like Christ.

Thank you Jesus for being my Savior, my Healer, my Redeemer! Praise the Lord! Thank you so much Lord for your forgiveness, your mercy, your grace, and your loving kindness! Thank you Lord for being my Comforter, my Provider, and my Protector. Please guide me and direct my path Lord. Amen.

Bible verses with reasons to memorize scripture

 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

God will comfort you in all your pain, sorrow, sickness, and hardships. Then you can use that same comfort that you received to help others when they are suffering.


"I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you" Psalm 119:11

Just like hearing my mom's voice telling me something over and over to make sure I brush and floss my teeth when I'm sitting in the dentist's chair getting a cavity filled. 


"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."  Matthew 4: 4

Knowing what scripture says will help us when we are tempted.


"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm....the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God," Ephesians 6:11-17

The word of God is a weapon to be used in the spiritual battle with the enemy. 


"Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience so that when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil." 1 Peter 3:13-17

We should always be ready to defend our faith.


Jesus said, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Matthew 28:18-20

The great commission is to be a witness to non-believers and know how to lead them to Christ if they want to saved from their sin. 


"How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." Matthew 12:33-37

Is the Bible up for interpretation?

"In essential things, unity.
In non-essential things, liberty.
In all things, love." 

Sometimes we have to agree to disagree.

"For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

I can read the same Bible verse a year later and get something totally new from it then I did a year ago. There is no reasonable expectation that I will know and understand everything there is to know about my Bible study reading in one sitting. 

"But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." 2 Peter 1:20-21

We need to ask God to help us understand what He is telling us in His Word.

"All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching and for showing people what is wrong in their lives. It is useful for correcting faults and teaching how to live right. Using the scriptures, the person who serves God will be ready and will have everything he needs to do every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17

What I learn in my Bible study may not be what you learn in your Bible study. When you read God's Word, God is speaking to you directly.

Are you a good person? Will you go to heaven when you die?

God is the creator of life. (Genesis 1:1)

God is omnipotent (all powerful). Isaiah 43:13, Matthew 19:26, Luke 1:37

God is omniscient (all knowing). Job 34:21, Prov. 15:3, Hebrews 4:12-13

God is omnipresent (always present everywhere at all times). Deut. 33:27, Jer. 23:23-24, Isaiah 57:15

God is perfect, holy, and without sin. Lev. 11:44-45, Matthew 5:48, 1 Peter 15-16

God gave us the 10 commandments as His standard of perfection. Exodus 20:1-17

If you have ever told a lie, stole something, said the Lord's name in vain, etc., then you are a sinner and are condemned. John 3:18, Eph. 2:1-3

If you break one commandment, then you've broken all of them. James 2:10, Galatians 5:9

No one is perfect. Romans 3:23

If you are not perfect, then you can't be with God in heaven when you die because the wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23

When you die, you are either with God or without God. Revelation 21:1-8

There isn't anything you can do to earn your way to heaven. Eph.2:8-9

God said there must be a sacrifice to shed blood in order to atone for our sins, and they had to sacrifice animals at the altar (Leviticus 16) but even the innocent animals were not perfect enough. 

Only Jesus is perfect (Jesus is God) and led a sinless life (Jesus is human). John 1:1, John 1:14, 1 Peter 2:22, Matthew 3:16

Jesus died on the cross, becoming the perfect sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sin.  John 1:29, John 19, 1 Peter 2:24

Jesus rose from the dead and is alive! John 20-21, Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24

Jesus ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father. Luke 24:51, Mark 16:19, John 1:18

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him (John 3:16-17). 

Salvation:

  1. Acknowledge that you have sinned and have fallen short of God's standard of righteousness. Romans 3:23
  2. Believe Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross paying the penalty for your sins and that He arose from the dead to give you new life. John 1:12, Romans 6:4, John 14:6
  3. Confess out loud that you repent and turn away from your sins and turn to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Romans 10:9-10

The Sinner's Prayer:

"Dear God,

I acknowledge my sins before You. I believe You sent Your Son Jesus to die on the cross to take the penalty for my sins so I could be forgiven. I am sorry for my sins and I want to live the rest of my life the way You want me to. Now I turn away from my sin and turn to Jesus, my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Jesus. Amen."

If you prayed this prayer and are a new believer, then the angels in heaven are rejoicing and praising God! Luke 15:10

If you are new believer, then the next steps are:

  1. Read the Bible Psalm 119:11, 2 Timothy 3:16
  2. Attend a Bible-believing church and have fellowship with other believers Col. 3:15-16, Hebrews 10:24-25, Eph. 4:11-16
  3. Get baptized Matthew 28:19-20, Romans 6:4, 

The believer's goal is to become more like Christ. Phil. 1:9-11, Phil 2:12-13, Col. 2:6-7, James 1:25

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5

John 13:7 Jesus washes the disciples' feet

Jesus answered, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand." (John 13:7)

OBSERVATIONS:

Jesus knew they wouldn't understand, but He did it anyway. 

Simon Peter asked Jesus, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" Simon Peter saw what He was doing but couldn't believe what he was seeing because it didn't make sense... that the Lord would stoop down, take off His garment and use it to wash his feet. 

Jesus humbled himself to cleanse His disciples. 

I think this could be called a foreshadowing and/or a metaphor of Jesus laying down His life to save us from our sin. 

One way to teach something important is by showing the student a picture or telling a story that is so shocking/mind-blowing/outlandish/silly/funny to get their attention. Jesus obviously got their attention when He took off his garment and stooped down to wash their feet.

This Lord of lords and King of kings did something so opposite of His title and position by acting as a servant...so opposite of His authority and dignity by exposing Himself...so opposite of what would be expected.


I think it's important to note that He cleansed His disciples.... 
Disciple (noun) one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another, a convinced adherent of a school or individual, a convert, a follower, a pupil. 

Then Jesus told them they should do the same thing to others as well (John 13:14-15). 

Jesus said, "if you know these things, blessed are you if you do them" (John 13:17)

So, we are blessed if we wash others' feet? I think this means we are to humble ourselves.

APPLICATION:

I definitely do not understand why so many bad things have happened, and when I cry out to God, the only answer I get when I pray is, "Be still and know that I am God." 

God knows that I don't understand. 

God is working, even though I don't see it, I still believe it. I have seen what God has done before. 

Jesus said to let the children come to Him because the kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these (Matthew 19:14). We are to have a childlike faith. 

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, you know that I don't understand. So, it's ok that I don't understand, as long as I believe and trust you Lord because I know you are good and have a plan and a purpose. I pray that someday I will understand, but until then, thank you Lord for your patience with me as I learn humility. I pray Lord that you comfort, heal, and restore those that I have hurt their feelings, Lord. Thank you for your forgiveness, Lord. Amen.

Adding music and signs to remember Bible verses

 I add music and hand motions (mostly American Sign Language, but not truly ASL) to help remember Bible verses. These could be for kids, but for adults too. I started adding signs to worship songs when I was the Children's Music Director for a few years at my church. This really helped the kids to focus, remember, and have fun with their memory verses, praise and worship songs, and special holiday performances. The parents seemed pleased that their kids were engaging and enjoyed practicing at home, which got the parents involved in learning the signs as well. The kids liked the challenge of trying to follow along and learn the signs, which is why I try to go a little slower at first, or maybe do an echo sometimes. I loved watching the older kids helping the younger kids learn the signs. Once the kids learned the words, the tune, and the signs, they liked to see how fast they could do them, which encouraged more practice, which is the whole point of Bible memory verses! How to do the S.O.A.P. method of Bible study, with a shorter time version and a more in-depth study version

Do you want to know how to hear God speak to you? 


Learn the step-by-step process how to pray to God, how to engage with God's Word, and how to apply the Bible to your busy life in just 10 - 15 minutes, or for a more in-depth Bible study in 30 minutes to an hour a day, but how much devotional time you spend is completely up to you.  


For new beginners (NB), I will give specific hints just for you.


S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method: Aeasy way to study the Bible for both new beginners and daily Bible readers alike, so you can find the answers that you are looking for, grow in your faith, and learn how to respond to what the Lord is speaking to you. 


The Soap method is: S = Scripture, O = Observation, A = Ask questions and Apply to my life, P = Prayer. 


List of items needed for this Bible Study Guide 


1) Quiet place to sit  


2) Bible in translation that you understand most clearly (w/o study notes) that you can markup 

(NB- I suggest New Living Translation NLT or Contemporary English Version CEV) 


3) A specific Bible-reading plan (NB- I suggest the Book of John in 21 days) 


4) have a few other Bible translations handy (www.BibleGateway.com

(NB- New American Standard Bible NASB 95English Standard Version ESV, New King James Version NKJV) 


5) Strong’s Concordance for your chosen translation (NB- The New Strong’s Expanded Exhaustive Concordance can be used with any modern Bible translation)  


6) spiral notebook or hardbound journal (NB- typing your study notes in a computer is the less-preferred option. It is highly recommended to write notes by hand on paper, because the physical act of handwriting will help you make the connection in your brain that is necessary to process the information into your memory and understanding.)  


7) your favorite pen to write with 


8) highlighters, pencils, or pens in several different colors to mark up your Bible.

STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS: Here are the 7 easy soap steps all laid out for you, with a shorter option and a more in-depth option:  


Step 1: Schedule an appointment with God every day to pray and to read and study His Word, approximately 10 minutes to an hour, but the amount of time and the time of day are totally up to you.   


Step 2: Follow a specific Bible-reading plan that is either, 1) reading the Bible in some sort of logical order in a certain measure of time, or 2) by a certain topic of your choice, such as salvation, forgiveness, finances, work, anxietyfear, depression, health, humility, identity, or purpose. 


Step 3: Before you begin your daily reading of Scripture, you must pray first. Ask God to help you to understand what you are going to read because it is a way of God speaking to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what God is saying and to help you draw closer to Him.  


Step 4: S = Scripture: Read the passage that is scheduled for today’s reading. Pick a verse that stands out to you the most in today’s reading and highlight it. Write this Bible verse in your notebook. 


             *** Here is my example for this lesson:  


S: He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end (Ecclesiastes 3:11).  


Step 5: O = Observation: This is the step that can take as little or as long of time as you need. Let God speak directly to you and do not use any study notes or commentaries or ask anyone for help with this step.  


Shorter time option: Write some or all these observations down in your notebook:


What is the context of the passage?  


Is there a logical flow in the main idea of what came right before your verse and what came right after your verse? 


Look up definitions and/or synonyms to a word or two to gain more insight 


Color code any repetitions by using a different colored pencil for each set:

underline in red the same word repeated,  

circle in blue the same name repeated,  

star in green every time you see words like therefore, thus, if, then,  

put an orange checkmark over any time words (subsequently, immediately),  

order words (first, above all, finally),  

comparison words (like, as),  

contrast words (but, however, whereas).  


Read the verse out loud and emphasize a different word each time you read it aloud to see if it changes the meaning, to give you a different perspective. 


Break up a long verse into smaller chunks to focus on and write each chunk in a different way in your own words. 


Can you summarize what the verse means? What can you learn from this?

  

***Here are my observations about Ecclesiastes 3:11:  


O: Context- King Solomon is writing about what he has learned, that there is a time for everything, about the futility of seeking happiness in our busyness, and that we should be content and take pleasure in the work He has given us. The repetition is what God has done. Time words beginning, end, eternity. Eternity = unending time. God created everything in the beginning. God created beauty. God made everything beautiful. God created my heart. God has a plan and already knows how everything is going to end. But time is unending? It’s okay that I don’t understand because no one can understand.  


More in-depth versionWrite some or all these additional observations down in your notebook:


Who wrote this passage? Who was this written to? When was it written? Where was it written? Why was it written? 

What is the historical context? 

What is the main idea? 

What is the central theme? 

What style was it written? 


Use scripture to interpret scripture by reading other Bible translations of the same verse, looking up words in the concordance, and any footnotes of Bible cross-references?  


 Interpretation: What does the verse mean? What can be implied from the text beyond what it says? Reread the passage a few more times as you need to glean from it.  


NBIt can be frustrating if you don’t know what it means, but allow yourself to have that moment where you don’t understand and be open to hear what God has for you. It’s okay because God has a plan and a purpose that He is preparing you for, and as you mull over it, it may just be the buried treasure you need to dig up in the future at a crucial time when you need to find the answer that you're looking for.  


Step 6: A = Ask questions and Apply to my life.  


Shorter time option: 

Ask God questions to help you understand better.  


Summarize what you learned from your observations and turn it into an action statement. 


What is God’s part? What is my part? If God _______, then I _________. So, what can I do today, this week to apply this to my life? Is there something that I need to stop doing? That I need to start doing?  


               ***Here is my example for Ecclesiastes 3:11:


A: If God knows how it’s going to end, then that means God is in control of everything that He created. If God created me and He made everything beautiful, then God says I am beautiful. If God created my heart, then God knows my heart. If God was in the beginning and the end of His creationbut time is unending, then God is unending, and time is eternalI learned that God knows a lot more than I do. God is in control of everything that He created, and I need to trust Him. So, I need to trust God because He has a beautiful plan and purpose for my life. Even though I don’t understand why I am going through this difficult time in my life, I need to stop worrying about my situation and trust God because He has a plan. I trust you God because You are in control, and You will work everything out even better than I could ever imagine. Thank you, Lord! 


More in-depth option:  

What is most surprising or impactful to you? How does it impact your perspective? 


How does your verse point to God? Point to Jesus?  


What did you learn about God and His character? Jesus and His attributes 


Now that you have learned more about God, you are better equipped to listen to Him. 


What did God speak to your heart? What is that inner voice whispering to you?  


Is God revealing a hardness in your heart? Give yourself time to reflect, step back and look from a different viewpoint at what God is doing in your life. What has he brought you through? What blessings has He given you?  


Think about a time in your past where this verse would have been helpful for you. 


Think about how you can use this verse to help someone else. 


Step 7: P = PrayerPray the Bible verse you read, your summarized observation, and action statement back to God. Thank God for what you have learned. Ask God to help you to do what you have learned. Affirm what you learned as truth that it is already done.  


***Here is my prayer:  


P: Dear God, You created everything in the beginning. You made everything beautiful. You created me and you know my heart. You already know how everything is going to end. God, you are in control of everything, and I need to trust you Lord that you have everything well in hand. Thank you, God, for creating me and making me beautiful in your eyes. I know that you are going to take care of me because you love me and you have a plan for me. Please help me to not worry Lord. Please help me to trust you God. I know that I don’t have to worry because I trust you God because you are in control. “Be still, and know that I am God,” says the Lord. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
